Juan Anguita holds a PhD in Animal Health from the University of León in Spain.

He started his independent career in the United States at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and University of Massachusetts Amherst until 2012.

He then moved to Bilbao, Spain, as Ikerbasque Professor with an appointment at CIC bioGUNE, where he is Group Leader and the manager of the AAALAC International-accredited Animal Facility.

His work is focused on the immune response to infectious microorganisms, particularly the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis. His interests are centred around the response of macrophages to pathogens and symbionts, the identification of novel vaccines against tick-borne and other pathogens as well as the determination of the molecular mechanisms that lead to inflammatory processes as potential therapeutic targets for persistent infections.

He has published over 110 publications in peer-reviewed journals such as PLoS Pathogens, Cell Host & Microbe, PNAS, etc.
