Project: Exploiting an innovative proteomic approach for novel Pseudomonas aeruginosa vaccine antigen identification

Organisation/Institute: University College Dublin (Dublin, Ireland)

Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Siobhán McClean

Irene Jurado is an Early Stage Researcher who comes from Asturias, a small region in the North of Spain. She will be working at the University College Dublin to carry out the ESR1 project “Exploiting an innovative proteomic approach for novel Pseudomonas aeruginosa vaccine antigen identification”, led by Assoc. Prof. Siobhán McClean.

Irene graduated from the University of Oviedo in Biology and completed a Master’s degree in Microbiology and Health in the University of the Basque Country. During her Bachelor’s degree, she did two internships in two different hospitals in Asturias at the Microbiology services. There, in addition to learning about basic microbiology techniques and hospital functioning, she carried out her End-Of-Degree Project, entitled “Diagnosis of tuberculous infection in risk population by the simultaneous use of two IGRA (Interferon-Gamma Release Assays).”

Her End-Of-Master Project, entitled “Typing of Candida parapsilosis clinical isolates and clade-association with point mutations related to antifungal resistance and biofilm formation ability,” was coordinated by Guillermo Quindós’ Research Group. During two years, she collaborated with them to gain experience in the laboratory and learn about molecular techniques and bioinformatics. Thanks to that, she is the author and co-author of some scientific contributions, which you can check in her Research Gate profile (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Irene_Jurado_Martin).

She is entirely decided to do a Ph.D. because she would like to make her contributions to science, lead high-quality scientific projects and teach new candidates in the future. She has a particular interest in developing tools that have a direct utility in the Health Care System and improve people’s health and quality life. The European Training Network BactiVax represents, therefore, an unbeatable opportunity to develop new and effective vaccines against challenging bacterial infections. This, in turn, matches her personal and professional aspirations.
