The first BactiVax publication is out now

Two months through his project, Samuel Pasco, our Project 7 Researcher has just published a review article in Cells. His paper reflects on lessons learnt from the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, the only approved vaccine against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). While BCG vaccination does not confer absolute protection against Mtb, it does stimulate trained immunity that correlates with lower mortality and increased protection against unrelated pathogens. This review focuses on BCG-induced trained immunity, including the required pathways to establish this phenotype. Additionally, potential methods to improve BCG trained immunity effects are discussed, together with advances in new anti-Mtb vaccines and other antimicrobial uses for BCG.
