The anti-Bacterial Innovative Vaccine Training Network (BactiVax) hosted their first in-person consortium meeting since the start of the programme, between 22nd - 25th November 2021 in Bilbao, Spain. This event was hosted by Professors Juan Anguita and Jesús Jiménez-Barbero on the premises of the Center for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE). An international group of over 30 participants enjoyed a 4-day showcase of research, innovation and training in the areas of vaccine discovery and development.

At the core of the event were the 15 excellent BactiVax early stage researchers (ESRs), who took the opportunity to interact, learn about each other’s research and establish new collaborations and friendships. The agenda (available here) included a blend of training sessions, short talks given by ESRs and presentations of guest speakers. The training programme had two main themes: Immunostimulation and Vaccine Aduvants (including antigen-epitope interactions, mucosal & T cell repsonses, or new adjuvants) and Methodologies in Vaccine Development (proteomic techniques, protein engineering and modern structural biology methods).

The event concluded with a tour of the core facilities at CIC bioGUNE, that include state-of-the-art equipment for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and advanced technology platforms for mass spectrometry and electron microscopy, among others.

In addition to the scientific and training programme, the participants also thoroughly enjoyed the social aspect of the meeting and got a taste of the Basque cuisine and culture. The final day included a tour of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which is the city’s architectural landmark and has a magnificent display of modern and contemporary art.

The BactiVax team would like to say special thanks to our wonderful hosts - Prof. Jesús Jiménez-Barbero, Prof. Juan Anguita and organising committee for such a fantastic event, and also to all ESRs, participants and guest speakers - Prof. Antonio Molinaro (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II), Dr. Alberto Fernández-Tejada (CIC bioGUNE) and Dr. Nicola Abrescia (CIC bioGUNE).
